What you will study

The Master's in Mathematics at the University of Agder is a two-year full-time programme taught in English on the Kristiansand campus. It carries 120 ECTS and has two specialisations: pure mathematics and mathematics education. The mathematics education track is open only to applicants from the EU/EEA.

What you study

The pure mathematics specialisation goes deeper into advanced mathematical concepts and methods. You work with mathematical problems and methods at an advanced level, learn to apply theoretical and practical knowledge, and gain in-depth knowledge of research in mathematics. The mathematics education specialisation deals with issues related to the teaching of mathematics and prepares students to become mathematics teachers.

Both specialisations qualify you for lectureships after you complete practical pedagogical education (PPU), and both qualify you for PhD studies. The programme is offered by the Faculty of Engineering and Science.

How the programme is organised

The programme runs over two years of full-time study. The language of instruction is English. You can spend a semester abroad at one of UiA's partner institutions as part of the degree. The programme description for the 2026-2028 cohort sets out the full structure.

Who it suits

This master's suits students who want a deeper understanding of mathematics itself, or who want to combine mathematics with teaching. The pure mathematics track is for you if you are aiming at mathematical research or at work where strong analytical skills matter. The mathematics education track is for EU/EEA applicants who want to teach mathematics at school level.

UiA has a team of experts in mathematics and mathematics education. In 2013 the institution was awarded the status of National Centre of Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (MatRIC) by NOKUT, the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education.

Admission, language and next steps

You need a bachelor's degree or equivalent education of at least three years (180 credits), with a minimum of 80 credits in mathematical subjects or equivalent. At least 20 of those credits must be at level 2. You must have a mark of C or better to enter the programme. Admission follows the regulations on admission to studies and courses at the University of Agder.

Non-EU/EEA applicants can only apply to the pure mathematics specialisation. Application periods: non-EU/EEA international applicants apply from 1 November to 1 December; EU/EEA applicants from 1 February to 1 March; Nordic citizens and applicants with a permanent or renewable residence permit in Norway from 1 February to 15 April. There are 10 student places. Check the programme page for the exact application system and any updates.

Tuition fees apply to international students with citizenship from outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland. Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland are normally exempt from tuition fees at state institutions. The Section for Admissions can answer questions about the application process; for questions about the programme itself, contact the faculty.

Before you apply

Master’s applications go straight to University of Agder, not through the national admission service (NUCAS). Study in Norway states that you need a bachelor’s degree comparable to a Norwegian bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS), including courses equal to at least one and a half years of full-time study relevant to the programme. Deadlines are set by each institution for each programme, so confirm yours. Entry requirements and language tests are also set by the institution, so start from the official programme page. Our guides cover tuition fees, study permits and housing.

Facts on this page come from the Study in Norway register, the official English-programme list run by HK-dir, the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills. Fees are in NOK as the institution lists them. "Not listed" means the register has no figure, not that the programme is free. Always confirm requirements, fees and deadlines with the institution.
