What you will study

What you study

Human geography at the University of Oslo looks at how place shapes social life, and how local and global processes connect. The programme is built around the idea that every place is unique but tied to many other places at once.

You can pick courses to match your interests. The department offers courses in urban studies, climate change adaptation, socio-environmental change, development and politics, and economic and labour geography. Methodological courses give you a choice of the methods geographers use, including Geographical Information Systems.

You write a master's thesis of either 60 credits or 30 credits. The thesis is your own independent research, done under supervision, and you can do fieldwork in Norway or abroad. You can also tie the thesis to research projects running at the department and with partners such as NIBR, TØI, ISF and FAFO. An internship course with public and private partners in the Oslo region lets you try working life. There is also the option of a semester abroad through the university's exchange agreements.
