What you will study

What you study

This master builds on a bachelor in computer science and goes deeper into the systems that industry and society depend on. The programme covers network security and efficient data processing. You learn to design and implement systems that use complex infrastructure, including the cloud, wireless networks and blockchain. You also study the technology behind artificial intelligence.

Practical skills carry a lot of weight here. You apply and extend what you learn through programming assignments and course projects rather than only reading about it. The master thesis can be written in collaboration with industry, and you can take part in innovation and research work.

Admission, language and next steps

You need a completed bachelor's degree in computer science, informatics or similar, with at least 50 ECTS credits in informatics or computer science courses. There are two specialisations with different maths requirements. Engineering students need at least 25 ECTS credits in mathematics, 5 ECTS credits in statistics and 7.5 ECTS credits in physics. Science students need at least 20 ECTS credits in mathematics or statistics. Foreign education must be equivalent.

If your courses come from outside the University of Stavanger, upload course descriptions with clearly defined learning outcomes alongside your transcript. Names and codes must match the transcript. Missing course descriptions can mean your application is not prioritised. Descriptions should be in English or Norwegian; an authorised translator is not required. You also need a grade average comparable to a Norwegian C.

The programme is taught in English and runs for two years (120 ECTS) in Stavanger. Deadlines differ by applicant group: non-EU applicants apply between 15 November and 1 December, EU applicants between 1 February and 1 March, and applicants with a bachelor's degree from a Nordic country between 1 February and 15 April. Check the programme page for the application system and any updates. Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland are normally exempt from tuition fees at state institutions; other degree students normally pay a fee the institution sets.
