About University of Stavanger

The University of Stavanger (Universitetet i Stavanger, UiS) is a public research university in Stavanger, Norway. It has two campuses in the city, one at Ullandhaug and another at Bjergsted, and the Bjergsted campus hosts the Faculty of Performing Arts. The university is organised in six faculties: Arts and Education, Social Sciences, Science and Technology, Performing Arts, Health Sciences, and the UiS School of Business and Law. It also has two national centres of expertise and the Museum of Archaeology, which was transferred to UiS in 2009.

The university's roots go back to Rogaland Regional College, established in 1969. That college merged with the Rogaland Polytechnic in 1986 to form Rogaland College Center. In 1994 the Stavanger University College was formed when Rogaland College Center merged with Stavanger Nursing College, Stavanger Social Work College, the Norwegian Hospitality College, Stavanger Teachers' College, Rogaland Music Conservatory and the Congregational College. In January 2005 the college was granted university status and became the University of Stavanger. It was the first university to form as the result of a merger. In 2012 it joined the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU), and it is also a member of the University of the Arctic.

Teaching is spread across the six faculties, with departments covering education and sports science, early childhood education, cultural studies and languages, media and social sciences, social studies, and the Norwegian School of Hotel Management. On the science and technology side there are departments for electrical engineering and computer science, mathematics and physics, mechanical and structural engineering and materials science, safety, economics and planning, chemistry, biosciences and environmental engineering, energy resources, and energy and petroleum engineering. The Faculty of Performing Arts has departments for classical music and for jazz, dance, PPU and music production. The UiS School of Business and Law covers innovation, management and marketing, economics and finance, and accounting and law.

The Study in Norway list (HK-dir) shows 20 English-taught degree programmes at the university: one at Bachelor's level and 19 at Master's level. Subjects on the list include dance, chemistry, engineering, computer science and IT, data science, economics, business administration, petroleum engineering, humanities and theology, environmental engineering, physics, performing arts, and social sciences and psychology. The NOKUT institutional category is university, and the DBH register lists it as a university owned by the Kunnskapsdepartementet.

For an international student, applications go through the institution's own system rather than a central national portal. Students from outside the EU/EEA need a study permit from UDI. EU/EEA and Swiss students are normally exempt from tuition at state institutions, while other degree students pay an institutional fee.
