About Oslo Metropolitan University
Oslo Metropolitan University is a state university in Oslo, with a subsidiary campus in Kjeller in Akershus. Most of the university sits in the city centre along the Pilestredet street. It is the second youngest of Norway's new universities, granted university status on 12 January 2018.
The institution grew out of what was until 2018 Norway's largest university college, Oslo and Akershus University College. That college was itself the product of many mergers of around 30 former vocational colleges and community colleges in the Greater Oslo Region, with roots in teacher and nursing education. From the mid-1990s these colleges became more like universities through a process of academization, broadening their scope and putting more weight on research and on master's and PhD education. In 2014 and 2016 the then-college merged with four large social science research institutes, which remain separate and keep their autonomy.
Teaching is organised under four faculties: Health Sciences, Education and International Studies, Social Sciences, and Technology, Art and Design. The primary language of instruction is Norwegian, but some courses are taught in other languages, mainly English, German and French, including courses aimed at international students. The university uses all three Norwegian academic career pathways.
The Study in Norway list shows 8 English-taught degree programmes here, all at master's level. Subjects include Information Technology, Civil Engineering, Sustainable Development, Mechanical Engineering, Area Studies, Product Design, Public Health, and Supply Chain and Logistics. The NOKUT register lists the institution as a university, owned by the Ministry of Education and Research.
For an international student, applications go through the institution's own system. Students from outside the EU/EEA need a study permit from UDI. EU/EEA and Swiss students are normally exempt from tuition at state institutions, while other degree students pay an institutional fee.
The register in numbers
Fees are in NOK as the institution lists them. A programme with no figure in the register is "not listed" on its page, never free.
