About Oslo School of Architecture and Design

The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (Arkitektur- og designhøgskolen i Oslo, AHO) is an autonomous institution in Oslo. It sits at Vulkan, a former industrial area by the Aker River, next to the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and the Mathallen food hall. The school teaches architecture, urbanism, design and landscape architecture.

AHO began right after the Second World War as a crisis course for architecture students who could not finish their degrees because of the war. Until then the only route to an architectural degree in Norway was at NTH in Trondheim. Architects had long pushed for a school more aesthetically and academically minded than a polytechnic. The course first belonged to the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry, became an independent school in 1961, and took its present name in 2005. Industrial design arrived as a two-year postgraduate study in 1979, with a full degree following in 1983. Landscape architecture joined the master's programmes in 2004.

Teaching is organised through four institutes: Architecture, Design, Form, Theory and History, and Urbanism and Landscape. The school runs three full-time master's programmes (Architecture, Design and Landscape Architecture), with the landscape programme taught in Oslo and at the Arctic University in Tromsø. It also offers post-professional master's courses in Urbanism and Architectural Conservation, and one doctoral degree, the Doctor of Philosophy.

The Study in Norway list (HK-dir) shows 2 English-taught degree programmes here, both at master's level, in industrial design and landscape architecture. The NOKUT category is specialised university, and the DBH register lists it as a state scientific college owned by the Ministry of Education and Research.

For an international student, applications go through the school's own system. Students from outside the EU/EEA need a study permit from UDI. EU/EEA and Swiss students are normally exempt from tuition at state institutions, while other degree students pay an institutional fee.
