About BI Norwegian Business School

BI Norwegian Business School, Handelshøyskolen BI in Norwegian, is a private business school in Norway. Its main campus sits in Nydalen in Oslo, with regional campuses in Bergen, Stavanger and Trondheim. It is organised as a self-owned foundation whose sole purpose is teaching and research.

Finn Øien founded the school on 1 June 1943 as a private evening school in trade and office subjects. The first business administration course ran in the evenings and lasted three months. In 1968 BI became a self-owned foundation, and the following year Parliament decided to provide state funding. The 1980s brought rapid growth and the goal of becoming a specialised university; BI hired its first professors in 1983 and gained the right to award the Siviløkonom title in 1985. In 2005 the Oslo campuses were consolidated in Nydalen and the school narrowed its focus to business and economics. BI holds EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA accreditation, and NOKUT accredits it as a specialised university.

Teaching is organised into nine departments, covering accounting and operations management, communication and culture, data science and analytics, economics, finance, law and governance, leadership and organisational behaviour, marketing, and strategy and entrepreneurship. BI offers education at bachelor's, master's, doctoral and postgraduate level, and runs an MBA with Fudan University School of Management in China. BISO, the student organisation, represents students and runs the Fadderullan orientation programme.

The Study in Norway list shows 20 English-taught degree programmes at BI: 3 at bachelor's level and 17 at master's level. Subjects include marketing, business administration, business analytics, corporate communication, data science, finance, entrepreneurship, psychology, accounting, economics, supply chain and logistics, and development studies. The register lists BI as a private vitenskapelig høyskole with the register name Handelshøyskolen BI.

For an international student, applications go through BI's own admission system rather than the national coordinated admission. Students from outside the EU/EEA need a study permit from UDI. Because BI is a private institution, tuition applies; the tuition exemption for EU/EEA and Swiss students at state institutions does not cover BI, so check the fee for your programme on the school's pages before you apply.
