What you will study
This is the part time Systems Engineering track of the Master in Innovation and Technology Management at the University of South-Eastern Norway. It is taught in English at the Kongsberg campus, over two years and 120 ECTS. The programme is interdisciplinary and built for both engineers and economists.
What you study
The Systems Engineering specialisation focuses on the design and management of complex engineering systems throughout a product's life cycle. You learn to approach problems with a systems-thinking perspective, so that products and processes are optimised from inception to completion.
The wider programme blends innovation and technology management with change processes, systems engineering and industrial management, in new ventures and in established organisations. A central theme is sustainable development: how to reduce the environmental impact of organisational activity and resource consumption while improving value creation and well-being. You also work with trends such as globalisation, digitalisation, circularity, sustainability and multicultural work environments, and how to spot the opportunities they create.
The programme ends with a master's thesis. You can write it closely with a company on a project that addresses a real industry challenge.
How the programme is organised
Teaching runs in intensive modules. Each course has 5 to 6 lecture days, usually completed within 1 to 2 weeks, and the exam comes after the teaching period. All courses require 90% attendance.
The learning approach is hands-on and problem-based. You tackle real challenges from the local business community, and lecturers bring experience from several business sectors. Campus Kongsberg sits next to Kongsberg Technology Park, and the programme keeps close ties with local industry.
There is also an exchange option, with partner institutions abroad, for part of the degree.
Who it suits
The programme suits people who want to lead change, restructure organisations or turn technology into value. It fits engineers moving towards management and economists who want to work closely with technology. If you like systems thinking and the full life cycle of a product, the Systems Engineering track is the natural choice.
Because this is a part time study, it does not give grounds for a student permit. It is open to EU/EEA applicants only. Non-EU/EEA citizens who need a student permit should apply for the full time study instead.
Admission, language and next steps
You need a bachelor's degree or equivalent in business administration or engineering. An equivalent education in science and engineering or social sciences may also qualify, provided it meets the academic requirements set by Universities Norway for business and administration or for STEM. You must also meet the English requirements.
Cohorts are split 50-50 between business administration and engineering, and up to 40% of places go to students with a bachelor's degree from non-Nordic countries. USN does not pre-approve courses or previous education; your qualifications are assessed only after you apply.
EU/EEA applicants may apply from 1 February to 15 April. Check the programme page for the application system and any updates before you apply.
