About NHH Norwegian School of Economics

NHH Norwegian School of Economics is a business school in Bergen, on Norway's west coast. It was founded in 1936 as the country's first business school, opened by King Haakon VII, and it is the leading teaching and research institution in Norway for management and business administration. The business community in Bergen pushed hard to get the school and to keep it there, and that link has stayed close since the start.

The school began with a two-year vocational degree, the handelskandidat. That degree became the siviløkonom in 1963 and later grew into a longer programme. NHH received permission to award doctorates in 1956, and the first doctoral candidate graduated in 1957. In 1963 the school moved to a new campus at Sandviken, just outside Bergen city centre, and the annual intake rose from 60 to over 200. Teaching now runs at master's and doctoral level, following the Bologna structure of a bachelor plus a master in economics and business administration.

Admission is the most selective in business administration in Norway. The undergraduate programme is consistently among the most popular first choices for applicants, and the school has a long record of sending staff and graduates abroad for further study. It was the first institution in Norway to offer a master's programme taught entirely in English, and it takes part in exchange programmes with more than 170 foreign business schools in over 50 countries. Around 40 percent of students spend at least one semester on exchange. NHH is a member of CEMS and the PIM network, and it is accredited by EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB.

The Study in Norway list shows 8 English-taught degree programmes here, all at master's level. Subjects include business administration, business analytics, economics, energy and renewable engineering, and marketing. In the national registers NHH is recorded as a specialised university, state-owned under the Ministry of Education and Research, with the Norwegian name Norges handelshøyskole.

For an international student, applications go through the school's own system. Students from outside the EU/EEA need a study permit from UDI. EU/EEA and Swiss students are normally exempt from tuition at state institutions, while other degree students pay an institutional fee.
